A Surreal Experience at Tate Modern

Miro, Aveugle Parmi les Oiseaux, 1978Tate Modern (London) is sponsoring a painting competition for young aspiring artists ages 11 to 18. The inspiration -- Surrealist masters and artists influenced by the philosophy. The challenge -- create a painting based on a work, artist or theme displayed in Tate's Poetry & Dream wing.

Lead by André Breton, the Surrealist movement was affected by Sigmund Freud's theories of the unconscious and dream analysis. Surrealists aspired to express thought in the absence of reason or moral preoccupation. Artworks by Salvador Dalí, Alberto Giacometti, Giorgio de Chirico, René Magritte, Jackson Pollock and Joan Miró exemplify Surrealism.

All entries to the Tate Painting Challenge must be received by November 3, 2008 and will be judged by an expert panel of artists, curators and art critics. The winners will be exhibited on the walls of Tate Modern in January 2009. Click here for more details
