Seeking Inspiration in the Humanistic Tradition of Classical Art

Fornaresca II by Tomasz Rut

"I look for inspiration in the humanistic tradition of classical art. My canvases express the entire spectrum of human emotions from exhilaration and cheerfulness to contentment, melancholy, pain, and agony" ~ Tomasz Rut

Tomasz Rut's masterful illusionary images, both in scale and splendor, evoke the harmony and form of the master painters, including the flamboyance of Rubens, the finesse of Caravaggio, and the emotion of Michelangelo. Rut's imaginary figures-centaurs, fauns, muses, and winged creatures-colorfully burst from the canvas with the grandiosity of Olympian Gods in active and dramatic poses.

Encouraged by his mother, a painter herself, as a child Rut was introduced to the Pompeiien Frescos and the magnificence of the Renaissance and the Baroque, which today inspire his stunning oils on canvas, sweeping murals and graphic works.

“My paintings give people the ability to learn, respond, and feel comfortable with the classics," Rut says. "This gives me enough satisfaction to keep working for a lifetime"...Read more

There Has Always Been Art and Music

Cello Solo

"Once, while listening to my mother play the violin, I dreamt of becoming a Musician, like her. Since I was young there has always been art and music in my home and in my life because my wife is also a painter and my daughter a cellist. Even today when I am painting I always listen to music and the rhythm and melody come through in the finished work" ~ Charles Lee

Korean born Charles Lee is a diverse multi talented artist with a capability of creating many different types of art, from pencil drawn portraitures to tranquil painted landscapes and arresting abstracts.

Charles Lee incorporates a range of style, and should be well received by collectors as it is very contemporary and pleasing to the eye. He works in two distinct styles, one which incorporates a naïve approach and the other which is more representational and romantic in tone.

His most recent compositions are paintings with a raised richly-textured finish, that utilize mixed media. They are a compelling combination of traditional and neoclassic ...Read more

Harley Artist Scott Jacobs Makes a Special Delivery

Park West Gallery artist Scott Jacobs participates in covert mission to surprise actor Robert Patrick on the set of the CBS hit show, The Unit

In late August 2008 a Harley Davidson dealer from San Diego, California was participating in the 105th Harley Davidson anniversary in Milwaukee and sold the Scott Jacobs painting "As American As…" to actor Robert Patrick (Col. Tom Ryan of The Unit). Jacobs wasn't able to attend the event in Milwaukee but when he heard about his latest sale, he decided it was one that required a little special attention.

Since actor Robert Patrick heads up the Special Forces unit on CBS's The Unit, Jacobs (Harley Davidson's first officially licensed artist) planned a covert mission to surprise the actor with the special delivery.

Two weeks before Patrick's 50th birthday (November 5) - and coincidentally, a couple of days before Jacobs' 50th - Jacobs and the Harley-Davidson dealer drove to the Santa Clarita, California studio where The Unit is filmed to deliver the framed original. After watching the filming of an episode, Jacobs explained that his father is a fan of The Unit so Patrick (Col. Tom Ryan) called Jacobs' father in character and also signed a script and hat for him.

About the Artist
Scott Jacobs' early artwork included pen and ink drawings for his high school newspaper. At nineteen, Jacobs bought a failing art gallery with money he earned from odd jobs. Two years later, at the age of twenty-one, Jacobs opened Reflections on Canvas Gallery in Westfield , New Jersey. At the urging of a friend, Scott merged his love of motorcycles with his artistic talent. Jacobs became the first officially licensed Harley-Davidson artist and continues to paint images that continue to amaze motorcycle enthusiasts world-wide.

About the Artist
Marko Mavrovich was born in 1960 to Croatian parents living in California. When he was ten, his parents moved back to Croatia with him. They moved around several of the islands off the coast of Croatia, but spent most of their time on the Island of Unije. This was his favorite island, and the beauty of the sea and coastline inspired Marko to begin sketching. With the support of his father Miro, who was a Watercolor Artist, and his mother who was his strongest critic, Marko honed his artistic abilities. During the summers, Marco sold his drawings to German and Italian tourists.

At the age of seventeen, despite encouragement from his parents to attend an art school, Marko chose to enroll in a school for Navigators. He never lost his passion for his art, and for the four years he was at Navigation School, he continued his art. When he was finished with school, he went to work on ships, all the while struggling with his two loves, the sea and his art. It was not until his father died and Marko had moved back to the United States for a better way of life that his love for his art finally won over his love for the sea. It came after working three and a half years as a commercial diver. “Being underwater in absolute silence helped me clear my thinking.” He said. “I finally realized I should be doing something better with my life.” Marko then began drawing, painting and exhibiting his work in street shows where, he was discovered by established galleries. Those galleries gave him valuable exposure through exhibiting his artwork in tradeshows around the country.

Although he was self-taught, Marko’s artwork has influences of his father, and Winslow Homer, the American landscape painter. His inspiration remains the same as when he first started drawing with pencil and black ink, back when he was little more than ten and living on those islands off the coast of Croatia. It is his love for the ocean and hillsides, and his desire to capture the beautiful light effects and colors, which has been the prominent theme in his artwork. Among his favorite places of inspiration are, Catalina Island, Laguna Beach, the North Coast of California and old Spanish Missions. He also spends time in parts of Europe and in Croatia where he has enjoyed considerable success and prestige.

"Some Say They See Poetry In My Paintings"

George Seurat (December 2, 1859 – March 29, 1891)

"Originality depends only on the character of the drawing and the vision peculiar to each artist." ~ Georges Seurat

Un dimanche après-midi à l'Île de la Grande Jatte
Source: Wikimedia Commons

George Seurat - born December 2, 1859 in Paris, France - was only 26 years old when he completed the masterpiece A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (pictured above). The landmark painting initiated the Modern art movement known as Neo-Impressionism, which relied on a technique of breaking color into its most basic elements. The artist applied paint in very small dabs, dots, and dashes which from a distance translate into the larger regions of color and form.

Seurat's signature style continues to influence contemporary painters like Park West Gallery artist, Fanch Ledan. In Interior with Seurat (pictured below), Fanch has decorated the wall of his interior space with Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte.
