Tavern Scenes at the Rijksmuseum

Rembrandt van Rijn, the artist viewed by so many as the world’s greatest etcher, is currently being featured in an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum. The Tavern Scenes exhibition gives an idea of what it was like to be in a tavern in the 16th and 17th century.

In his etchings, Rembrandt was able to convey so much information about his subjects. Therefore it is fitting that his etchings would be used as a window into Holland’s past – in this case used as a window into life in Holland’s taverns.
