Rembrandt Painting Technique Recently Discovered

Rembrandt's Saint James The Greater, 1661. (Lefteris Pitarakis/Associated Press)
Researcher Steve DiPaola from the University of British Columbia recently uncovered how master artist Rembrandt van Rijn created his artworks to guide the viewer’s gaze. While using software to examine lighting and spatial layout, DiPaola determined Rembrandt’s technique was to paint a sharper focus on certain areas of the work in order to draw the viewer’s eyes to that area.
