Pontiac, MI (Sept. 28, 2010)—Albert Scaglione, founder and CEO of Park West Gallery, was honored today by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson at the 18th Annual Quality People, Quality County (Q2) Breakfast at the Centerpoint Marriott in Pontiac. The Q2 Award is given each year to members of the community who have made a positive, continuous impact on the residents of Oakland County and Southeast Michigan.

“Albert Scaglione is most deserving of this recognition because of his tireless efforts toward enhancing the quality of life for others as well as his deep caring, compassion and concern for those facing extreme hardship. He has been at the vanguard in promoting the arts, philanthropy and volunteerism for over forty years,” said Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. “It is with the deepest respect, admiration and appreciation that I recognize Albert Scaglione with the 2010 Q2 Award.”

Local people have given back to the county

The Oakland Press (Sept. 26, 2010)—Even in the darkness of economic distress, there are those among us who step forward to brighten our world by enhancing the quality of life for their fellow citizens.

That certainly applies to the four outstanding individuals who will be honored at my 18th Annual Quality People, Quality County Awards Breakfast in the Centerpointe Marriott on Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Albert Scaglione, president and owner of Park West Gallery in Southfield, learned the value of a dollar at the age of 8 working Saturdays on his father’s scrap metal truck in Nutley, N.J. When he turned 16, Scaglione jumped down off his dad’s truck and into a job at a cousin’s art gallery where he learned the techniques of stretching and varnishing canvasses and framing works of art.

After receiving his doctorate in mechanical engineering, Scaglione landed a job with NASA. When the government canceled the project on which he had been working, he re-entered the art world. His Park West Gallery on Northwestern Highway has served more than 1.3 million customers over the past 41 years.

The gallery has prospered and so have the individuals and organizations Scaglione and his family have taken under their wing. The Park West Foundation, which he founded, has been a source of support for young women forced to leave the foster care system at the age of 18. Park West Gallery also donates art to charitable groups, opens the gallery to 501(c)(3) charities for fundraisers and has made available about $1.5 million worth of clothing to those in need. Scaglione has what might be called an “Art with a Heart” perspective on life, which has given him the joy and satisfaction of being able to give back to his community by helping to improve the quality of life for others…

Park West Gallery Donates Art to Best Buddies South Beach Fundraiser

Park West Gallery to the Best Buddies fundraiser held in South Beach on Sept. 16.

On Thursday, September 16, Park West Gallery donated seven works to Best Buddies of Florida for a local fundraiser. The silent auction was part of Best Buddies of Florida’s Business Buddies networking event held at the W Hotel in South Beach.

The Park West Gallery donation included artwork from some of our most popular contemporary artists, including Alfred Gockel, Romero Britto and Thomas Kinkade. Additionally, four animation cels were donated. The donated items raised funds for Best Buddies of Florida, with all proceeds going to support local Best Buddies programs in the Miami area.

Park West Gallery Represents Michigan as 2010 American Art Awards Judge

Park West Gallery was honored to be chosen as this year’s Michigan representative for the “2010 Prestigious Hall Of Galleries” that judged The 2010 American Art Awards; Park West Gallery was also selected as the Michigan judge in 2009.

Actor Thom Bierdz, who plays Phillip Chancellor III on The Young and the Restless, founded and hosts the annual art competition. Bierdz recently gave an interview to Canyon News about the awards.

Park West Gallery Goodwill Mission Continues

On Friday, September 17, Park West CARES continued its mission of goodwill by giving dozens of clothing items to the Counterpoint Shelter & Crisis Center, a program of Starfish Family Services. Through its Park West CARES donation initiative, Park West Gallery has arranged to give hundreds of essential items to local nonprofit organizations since July 23, 2010.

SOUTHFIELD, MI — Park West Gallery founder and CEO, Albert Scaglione, and wife, Mitsie Scaglione, were honored during the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame’s annual induction ceremony at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi, MI, on September 13, 2010. The Hall of Fame recognized the Scagliones for their extensive and generous involvement in Michigan.

Specifically, in an ongoing collaboration with the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, the Scagliones and Park West Gallery provided memorabilia and artworks from its world-class sports collection to be sold, and 100% of the proceeds are to be donated equally to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and the Park West Foundation . . .

In Pursuit of Nobility—The Art of Robert Kipniss

As a young art student in Minneapolis one day in 1974, I experienced an artistic awakening. While wandering through an art display in a bank, I was touched by a singular work; a lithograph in dark tones of brown and green. I stopped, contemplated it for a moment and moved on.

A few minutes later I felt an urge to revisit that same work and see if I could ascertain what it was that had attracted me to it. I studied the work more carefully. In it, were a few small houses, nestled in a deep receding landscape. Trees appeared as well. Their leaves fluttered in a tangible and yet empty space, but there were no branches connecting them. As I viewed the work, I was overcome with a poignant feeling, a mood I could not associate, but felt nevertheless. I moved on to take in the remaining works by other artists in the exhibition, but I continued to feel a tug to return to that work again and experience its remarkable effect on me.

I went back yet a third time. This time, I slowed down and took in the composition, the technique used, the overall balance and order of the work. All these impressed me equally and served to heighten the mood I was experiencing at the same time. I took notice of the artist’s name then, finally. It was Robert Kipniss, American; born 1931. Little did I know at the time, what a profound aesthetic experience I had just encountered and what effect it would have on me for years to come...

Park West CARES Goodwill Mission Reaches Detroit

To complete the eighth consecutive week of the Park West CARES goodwill initiative, the Park West Gallery volunteer crew hit the road and headed to downtown Detroit. On Friday, September 10, Park West CARES brought dozens of clothing items to Open Door Rescue Mission Ministries. Additional Park West CARES donations are scheduled throughout the coming weeks at other local nonprofit organizations.

Park West Gallery Featured in The Michigan Chronicle

The September 8-14, 2010 Issue of The Michigan Chronicle features an article entitled 'Park West Gallery donates clothing, art to Grace Centers of Hope.' The story discuss the successful Park West Gallery donation initiative, Park West CARES. In part:

Park West owners Albert and Mitsie Scaglione have a longstanding relationship with Grace Centers of Hope. In 2008, they donated more than $25,000 to the nonprofit towards its Men’s Dorm Renovation Project. This generous gift spearheaded Grace Center’s fundraising campaign for the project.

One hundred percent of this new clothing will go to the Grace Centers of Hope Thrift Stores. Monies raised by selling the merchandise in the stores will benefit the organization’s programs and services.

The same day as the clothing donation, Park West also gave Grace Centers of Hope 11 pieces of art by Thomas Kinkade, a Christian painter, through the foundation. Most of the paintings will go to the homes in Little Grace Village, Grace Centers of Hope’s safe and affordable housing revitalization effort on Seneca Street in Pontiac. Graduates of Grace Centers of Hope’s one year life skills program rent the homes. The other paintings will hang at Grace Gospel Fellowship.

Park West Gallery Hosts Seminar Featuring Author Susan Shapiro

August 11, 2010: Author Susan Shapiro autographs her latest novel, Overexposed, at Park West Gallery in Southfield, Michigan.

Professional writer and author Susan Shapiro was the featured guest speaker at a writing workshop hosted at Park West Gallery on August 11. The seminar was sponsored by the Association for Women in Communications Detroit Chapter.

Ms. Shapiro provided great advice to the attendees, including her tips for writers looking to get published in magazines and mainstream media outlets. Each attendee also received a copy of Ms. Shapiro’s new comic novel, Overexposed.
